Introduction
The Department of Pharmacology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS),
Bhubaneswar, established in 2013, is brimming with potential and striving to achieve
state-of-the-art facilities to contribute to the healthcare scenario of the institution. As part
of one of India’s premier healthcare institutions under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya
Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY), the department is dedicated to advancing pharmacological
sciences while embodying the three foundational pillars of an institute of national
importance: teaching, research, and patient care. These principles are seamlessly
integrated into our curriculum and woven into the daily culture of our dynamic
environment.
We provide comprehensive education and training to a diverse cohort of students in
MBBS, Nursing, Operation Theatre/Anaesthesia Technology (OT/AT), MD
(Pharmacology), and DM (Clinical Pharmacology) courses. Our curriculum blends core
pharmacology with advanced training in research methodology for various study
designs, especially the conduct and design of clinical trials, pharmacokinetics,
biostatistics, computer languages like R etc. Through innovative teaching approaches
such as seminars, journal clubs, clinical case discussions, problem-based learning, and
hands-on modules, we empower our students to excel in clinical practice and research.
Research is a cornerstone of our department, with a focus on clinical trials, population-
based pharmacokinetics, Trial simulations and drug utilization studies to explore the
efficacy and safety of various drugs and identify patterns and practices of medication
errors. We actively collaborate with various departments within AIIMS Bhubaneswar,
fostering interdisciplinary research that contributes to national and global advancements
in pharmacology. The faculty of the department have been receiving intramural and
extramural grants for their research ideas from institutional and national bodies.
The department runs a therapeutic drug monitoring clinic where we provide
recommendations based on the integration of patient response to treatment and
pharmacokinetic modelling. As a key contributor to the Pharmacovigilance and
Materiovigilance Program of India, we prioritize patient safety through robust adverse
drug reaction reporting and analysis.
The Department of Pharmacology at AIIMS Bhubaneswar is driven by a vision to
become a leader in pharmacological education, research, and patient care. With a
commitment to innovation, collaboration, and compassionate service, we are steadily
progressing toward establishing cutting-edge facilities to serve our community and
advance healthcare with excellence. We share our learnings in R and pharmacokinetics
with other interested colleagues around the country via national level workshops
conducted biennial.
