Cyber Security Awareness

General Cyber Security Guidelines

1. Password Security

Cybersecurity is the backbone of digital safety, and passwords are its first gatekeepers. A weak password can lead to data breaches, identity theft, and unauthorized system access.

This month’s focus is on Password Security – ensuring our digital identities are protected.

📌 Why it matters:

  • Strong, frequently updated passwords help prevent unauthorized access to sensitive systems and protect institutional data.

Do’s:

  • Use complex passwords (8+ characters, with uppercase, lowercase, numbers & symbols)
  • Change passwords at least every 45 days
  • Use multi-factor authentication wherever available

Don’ts:

  • Don’t use the same password across sites
  • Don’t store passwords in browsers or unsecured files

Benefits: Reduced risk of account compromise, improved data protection, and better compliance.

“Treat your password like your toothbrush. Don’t let anybody else use it, and get a new one every six months.” — Clifford Stoll

3. Work Device Security

Work devices are the entry points to our institutional networks. Leaving them unprotected risks compromising sensitive systems.

This month’s focus is on Device Security – ensuring our desktops, laptops, and other devices are secure.

📌 Why it matters:

Unsecured or outdated devices can be easily infected with 🪲 malware or 🪲 ransomware, putting institutional data and services at risk.

✅ Do’s:

  • Keep your Operating System always updated.
  • Always lock your desktop when away (Win ⊞ + L is your friend).
  • Shutdown devices at the end of the day.
  • Enable firewall and network protection. (Press Win ⊞ → Type: Firewall & Network Protection → Press: Enter)
  • Use only the official institutional network for work access.
  • Regularly back up critical files to secure storage.

🚫 Don’ts:

  • Don’t install unauthorized or pirated applications.
  • Don’t connect unknown USB drives or external devices.
  • Don’t share system, printer, or network passwords.
  • Don’t ignore security warnings or update alerts.

🎯 Benefits:

  • Ensures confidentiality of sensitive data.
  • Protects institutional infrastructure from 🪲 malware and threats.
  • Reduces downtime caused by system compromise.
  • Builds a stronger security culture among staff.

“Your device is your responsibility. Protect it like your workspace.”
